Get a glimpse of mid-20th century political & social life through an exhibition launch celebrating Dame Pattie Menzies.

The Robert Menzies Institute invites you to the launch of our latest exhibition – Australia’s First Lady: Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Dame Pattie Menzies.

The exhibition gives a glimpse of mid-20th century political and social life through exquisite photos, accessories, letters, exchanges between political wives around the world and other memorabilia connected to Australia’s longest-serving First Lady, Dame Pattie Menzies, wife of Sir Robert Menzies.

Diana Menzies – Sir Robert and Dame Pattie’s granddaughter – will be joining us on the day and has generously agreed to share her reflections on her grandmother.

Date: Thursday 22 May 2025
Time: 3-5pm
Venue: Robert Menzies Museum, East Wing, Old Quad, The University of Melbourne, Parkville, 3010
Tickets: FREE for members / $30 for non-members. Book here

Dame Pattie played a central role in Sir Robert’s life and career – as a close confidant, partner and hostess during both national and foreign public engagements. She was also admired as a symbol of Australian virtue and strength.

The exhibits reveal the elegance and grace of mid-20th century life and social interactions – a real trip down memory lane.
