2026 ANZAC Oration: The Hon Andrew Hastie MP | ANZUS at 75: Inheriting Sacrifice, Shaping The Future”

The Robert Menzies Institute invites you to the 2026 ANZAC Oration to be delivered by the Honourable Andrew Hastie MP. Andrew will share his reflections on the ANZUS alliance; one of Sir Robert Menzies’s most important legacies. Andrew’s oration will be on the topic “ANZUS at 75: Inheriting Sacrifice, Shaping The Future”.

ABOUT ANDREW HASTIE MP

The Hon Andrew Hastie MP is a member of the Australian Parliament, representing the electorate of Canning in the House of Representatives.

Mr Hastie completed a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in History and Philosophy through the University of New South Wales at the Australian Defence Force Academy. In 2006, he graduated officer training at the Royal Military College, Duntroon.

In 2009, Mr Hastie deployed to Afghanistan as a Cavalry Troop Leader. In 2010, he was selected for service with the Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) as a Troop Commander, taking commands in maritime and special reconnaissance capabilities.

He deployed to Afghanistan again in 2013 as a Troop Commander with the Australian Special Operations Task Group. During his service with the SASR, he deployed to various theatres in the Middle East and Indo-Pacific.

Mr Hastie resigned from the ADF in 2015 to successfully contest the Canning by-election for the Liberal Party of Australia. He was re-elected in the general elections of 2016, 2019, 2022 and 2025. Mr Hastie has served as Chair of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security from January 2017 to December 2020, and as Assistant Minister for Defence from December 2020 to May 2022.

Mr Hastie was appointed the Shadow Minister for Defence in June 2022, following the general election. In 2024 he completed a Graduate Certificate in Business Economics from Harvard Extension School. He was appointed Shadow Minister for Defence Industry; Defence Personnel in March 2024, along with his ongoing responsibilities as Shadow Minister for Defence. Following the 2025 general election

Mr Hastie was appointed the Shadow Minister for Home Affairs. In October 2025, Mr Hastie resigned from the Shadow Cabinet and now serves as a backbencher.

Andrew Hastie lives in Mandurah, Western Australia, with his wife Ruth and their three young children, Jonathan, Beatrice and Jemimah.
