Fancies I Dare Not Speak: The Hidden Verse of RG Menzies

The Robert Menzies Institute invites you to the launch of our latest book – Fancies I Dare Not Speak: The Hidden Verse of RG Menzies – on Wednesday 15 October 2025.

This book is a comprehensive collection of his poetry and verse, a hobby that he pursued throughout his life, from his childhood in Jeparit to his time as Australia’s prime minister and beyond.

The foreword has been written by the Institute Fellow Dr Damien Freeman and the collection has been edited by William Cook, Georgina Downer and Victoria Hronas.

The book gives a glimpse into the inner world of Sir Robert – his wit, his love for nature and his acute insights into human nature and society. His poems and verses are at once funny, warm, generous, and a window into early-mid 20th century Australian life and attitudes.

We are delighted to share that the book will be launched by Julian Leeser MP and will include remarks by Dr Freeman.

Please join us for the launch of this wonderful book.
