Robert Menzies opened Australia’s diplomatic ties with the United States by appointing Richard Casey as the first Minister to Washington in 1940 during his first term as Prime Minister. During his second term beginning in 1949, Menzies made it a firm priority to forge closer bonds with the United States in order to protect Australia from threats in the Pacific region during the Cold War. Menzies would later reflect that the signing of the ANZUS treaty between America, Australia and New Zealand in 1951 was one of his greatest achievements.
