Toby Young, Lord Young of Acton, visited Melbourne in September 2025 to deliver the 2025 Menzies Oration at the Robert Menzies Institute’s Annual Dinner. In his Oration, Lord Young took a similar line calling out the concerning rise of attacks against ordinary citizens’ right to free speech emanating from both the Left and the Right across the Anglosphere.  Governments may argue that misinformation and disinformation are a danger to democracy and thus justify curtailing free speech rights, but all this does is to undermine democracy. In the end, the best way to combat misinformation or bad ideas is more speech, not less.
